Example: A maritime zone adjacent to the territorial sea where the coastal state may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration, or sanitary laws and regulations within its territory of territorial sea, and to punish infringement of the above laws and regulations committed within its territory and territorial sea. Under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. the Zone may not exceed twenty-four miles from the baselines of the territorial sea.
