Example: The part of a testator's estate that remains indisposed of after all of the estate has paid out all claims and given to all specified beneficiaries except for the residual beneficiary. For example, A (the testator) has a total estate of $10,000 at his death. The estate (the $10,000) owes $1,000 to B, leaves $3,000 to C and the "residual" to D. The residuary estate is $6,000 and D is the residuary legatee or residual beneficiary.
